Well Done England.......

England did so well on Wednesday even my dog could not keep his eyes off the screen!

It looks like The World Cup has turned out like WW2

The French surrendered early,
The USA arrived last minute,
and we are left fighting the Germans!

After a comment from "Anonymouse" I just had to add this clip from youtube....

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak without censorship or limitation.
Thats why I posted the comments by "Anonymouse" perhaps
next time you will let us know who you are?
For those with a sense of humour.... Enjoy and cringe at Basil.

PS The Dog (Snoopus) is a West Highland Terrier......he is Scottish!

UK Webinar ~ Producing RC Drawings in AutoCAD Structural Detailing

This interactive demonstration and feedback session will be focused on the production of reinforced concrete drawings and schedules using AutoCAD Structural Detailing. ASD is supplied with Revit Structure Suite, so we will also look at the optional process of exporting our geometry from RS to ASD.

ASD is not new to the market, however it has recently gone under a lot of development which is why we think its now ready to demonstrate. We would very much appreciate your feedback and comments both during the session and afterwards. If you have access to a phone or a microphone, you will be able to talk directly to the presenter, or you can simply type questions into the chat facility.

AutoCAD Structural Detailing helps improve design accuracy by providing tools that automate the generation of more complete and comprehensive details, drawings, schedules, and material takeoffs. The software provides tools that help with the creation of concrete reinforcement drawings and enable efficient modelling of steel connections and shop drawings. AutoCAD Structural Detailing supports the building information modelling (BIM) process for structural engineering by extending structural design workflows to fabrication, enabling a more efficient and accurate process for creating fabrication details and drawings.

TLA’s or Three Letter Acronyms and Mnemonics

.
During work and particularly in the construction industry we are surrounded by TLA’s. Computers have use TLA for the file extension for years up to the new crop that can have FLA (you guessed it Four Letter Acronym extensions. Autodesk have spent years’ taking people to court and arguing about who owns the rights to the term dwg for DraWinG!

With texting on mobile phone, my 18 and 16 years old daughters seem to talk a completely different language to the Queens English I learnt at school, my youngest daughter Kelly exclaiming “O.M.G.” in a posh voice, when she saw that I had actually finally got a round to spring cleaning and tidying up my study this weekend.

At work we spend an awful lot of time completing PQQ’s (Pre-Qualifying Questionnaires) these days just to get on the possible selection list for schemes. Recently a Partner completing a PQQ emailed me and asked could we produce drawings in IFC and what was it?

So I promptly informed him that IFC standard was developed by the IAI (International Alliance for Interoperability) to handle 3D file data. Major CAD (Computer Aided Design or Drafting) vendors helped to develop the standard and the tools to support it.

The IAI is a division of the ISO (International Standards Organization), the body that controls the IGES and STEP data standards. The IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard is being used in leading construction projects in Europe and beyond. IFC is used as a basis for the Building Information Modelling (BIM), a 3D model of the building project and a rich source of information shared by all the project participants.

Then I proudly informed him that Revit can export IFC files of three varieties, and it is all about the “I” for Information in BIM. I asked him to find out what information they actually wanted to capture and how they were intending to try and use this file format and the data.

He sent me an email for the originator of the PQQ which simply said “Sorry – I mean ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION. (IFC) “

So take care and don’t ASSUME or it may make an ASS out of U and Me

What’s New in Revit Architecture 2010 Again!

.
Here are a number of Autodesk Revit Architecture What’s New in Revit Architecture 2010 which are presented by Chico Membreno that have re-uploaded to YouTube on the 4th June again for some reason?

So here they are again for you to enjoy if you missed them the first time around.
Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 User Interface – 2:26
The user interface has four key areas that will streamline the way you will work in Revit Architecture.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Design Visualization – 2:30
With the fully integrated mental ray rendering engine, architects and designers can capture design ideas in a photorealistic state. Coupled with an extensive library of render appearances, high-quality renderings can be created from your working Revit model in just a few clicks. There's need to rely on external applications for your in-process renderings or critical client presentations.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Sustainable Design – 2:49
Revit Architecture supports your sustainable design workflow with the ability to create data-rich models, which can be analyzed via the gbXML file format.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Material Take-Off's – 1:09
Material Quantity Take-off's allow users to create detailed material quantities directly from the building information model. To increase usability, material take-off's operate very much like schedules or quantities.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Detailing – 3:01
Adding Detail to Projects continues to be one of the more tedious tasks that face architects and designers today. In Revit, there are several tools that help minimize the tedium of this process.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Schedules – 2:40
The beauty of working in Revit Architecture is that it reduces coordination mistakes that are often considered just part of the job. This couldn't be any more significant than in the case of schedule. Our Building Information Model can contain as much information as we add to its components. This is especially significant if I intend to use the model after the design phase -- all the way through construction or maybe even into Facilities Management.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Parametric Components – 2:19
Parametric Components, also known as families, are the basis for all building components designed in Autodesk Revit Architecture. They offer an open, graphical system for design thinking and form making as well as an opportunity to express design intent at increasingly detailed levels. Use Parametric Components for the most elaborate assemblies, such as cabinetry and equipment, as well as for the most elementary building parts, such as walls and columns. Best of all, no programming language or coding is required.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Bidirectional Associativity – 2:30
Autodesk Revit Architecture offers a unique design approach to ensure that your construction documents are well-coordinated. With Bidirectional Associativity, managing tags for sections and other detail views becomes a thing of the past. Revit does this coordination automatically for you. Even when big changes are made to the design late in the process, there is no need for drafters to manually update drawings and make sure that drawing keys are still coordinated. The same concept applies when additional details are added to a sheet or when a series of details are moved from one sheet to another. Experience has proven that this manual process can take excessive amounts of time AND is prone to errors.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Building Maker – 2:34
Building Maker is a flexible and responsive conceptual modeling and design environment linked to the Autodesk Revit building model. Unique among software tools, it enables a cumulative understanding of the relationship between expressive and built form as the design develops. A designer can develop conceptual models independently and map them to building model components as the design progresses, working fluidly between the conceptual model and the building model. Design intent and detail are captured at the earliest stages of design.

Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 What’s New Conceptual Design – 2:46
This is the massing environment for conceptual design in Autodesk Revit Architecture. It's been redesigned from the ground up to create an intuitive design environment for design exploration. While the interface and tools are easy-to-use, the capabilities are still highly sophisticated and allow you to develop top of the line conceptual designs right inside of Revit. Furthermore, the transition from conceptual design to design development and all the way into CD's will be seamless and none of the valuable parametric data stored in your forms will ever be lost.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 ~ 90 Second Video Tutorials

.
Here are some more Autodesk produced 90 second videos uploaded to YouTube, on the 10th may 2010. These short videos are really useful. however If only Autodesk could actually watch them before posting as the sound quality in this batch is not good as the last lot and could have been adjusted to make these perfect!.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - Valves & Fittings – 0:53
It is now possible to place valves, fittings, and other types of duct or piping accessories while in an elevation or section view. For example, you can switch to an elevation view and place a valve in a vertical pipe. You can also add and modify valves and fittings in the 3D view.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - Text & Leader Improvements – 1:01
Users can use text formatting keyboard shortcuts and be able to find and replace words within their notes. The leader enhancements include allowing users to set the proper justification for the leader within the top, middle, or bottom locations of the text note and adjust the distance between the leader end and the text note.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - Temp Dimensions - 1:18
As you create or select geometry, Autodesk Revit MEP software displays temporary dimensions around the component. This is useful in helping to place the component in the proper location. To view the temporary dimensions of a component, click Modify and select the component. If there are dimensions you want to appear at all times, create permanent dimensions.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - Tag on Placement - 1:24
You can now tag MEP components as they are being placed instead of tagging them as a separate set of steps. Tag on Placement is now enabled for most categories of objects in Revit MEP. The Tag on Placement functionality is a toggle button found in the ribbon when placing new elements. If there is not a tag currently loaded for the object being placed, Revit will prompt you to load one.

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - SunPath Simulation – 1:16
Autodesk Revit MEP 2011 enables you to evaluate the sun path to help understand the impact of the sun and sun path in relation to the project location. You now have the ability to show a visual representation of a period of the year to study, or a particular time of day to better understand the impact of the sun and shadows in relation to the surrounding environment. (Poor Sound Quality)

What's New in Revit MEP 2011 - Content & Piping – 1:09
Many new types of electrical content have been added. New content is now provided for communications, fire safety, data, nurse call, and so on. Control panels have also been added. In addition, theres a new pipe fitting type for flanges: If you define a flanged pipe type, you can edit the type and specify a companion flange thatll be automatically inserted between the pipes and flanged fittings, and on connections to equipment such as pumps. (Poor Sound Quality)

For more of these useful videos from Autodesk keep an eye on AutodeskBuilding on YouTube.

Revit Architecture Wish List - May 2010 AUGI Voting Results

.
The results of the Revit Architecture Wish List voting held during May 2010 are presented on the AUGI Product Communities Pages

Hopefully soon Revit Structure and Revit MEP Users will be afforded the same privileges as RAC Users.

The Points column totals the votes for a particular wish by giving a wish ten points for each first-choice vote, nine points for each second-choice vote, etc. through one point for each tenth-choice vote.

The First Choice column indicates how many first-choice votes a wish received.

The Score column normalizes the Points total for a wish by dividing it by the number of voters so that the popularity of a wish can be compared across voting cycles even though the number of voters in each cycle would differ.
